YFO & NABCJ
Just-Us Review Council—Community Policing for All
+
You & Five-O, LLC (YFO) & the North Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice (NABCJ) presents the Just-Us Review Council—Community Policing for All.
You & Five-O, LLC created and developed the Just-Us Review Council which is supported by the N.C. Chapter of NABCJ. We believe communities deserves more than a voice during times of crisis—they deserve a voice, before a crisis ever occurs.
We recognize the historical relationship between law enforcement and many communities, particularly African-American communities. We do not ignore that history. We learn from it.
We recognize that trust is built through understanding. The Just-Us Community Playbook will provide communities with practical tools to better understand and shape public safety within their communities.
You & Five-O, LLC and the N.C. National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice will be here when you’re ready to learn how to become more effective when engaging with law enforcement, before a crisis.
Participants will leave with their Playbook that we believe will help them understand what to ask of the local police agency. Our partnership believes that building relationships with law enforcement before a crisis are often the ones that carry communities through one.

About You & Five-O & BJ
You & Five-O, LLC was created in 2015. The founder Beverly “BJ” Council started out with what she knew about policing and what she thought the community needed to hear in order to get home safely after police interactions. However, after hearing and listening to over three thousand community members, primarily African-Americans, what she heard repeatedly was the community telling her what they needed. Which was help in understanding law enforcement and how to navigate with that knowledge.
BJ didn’t hear thousands of different concerns from the community about policing, she heard the same FIVE. So, after eleven years of her listening to their experiences, voices and stories, the community gave her their Top Five concerns. She heard them and You & Five-O, LLC now teaches based on those concerns. That is real community policing. That’s how We All Get Home.
B.J. Council is a retired police executive from Durham, N.C. She retired from the Durham City Police Department in 2010. She was the first African-American female to reach the position of Deputy Police Chief.
